What If We Proved the Devil? For many, the devil is the embodiment of true evil. A terrifying and ancient, ever-present force existing in the shadows of humanity, orchestrating all the terrible things that have happened and ever will happen.
But what if this malevolent being wasn’t just the stuff of stories, but instead a real-world, accepted entity? This is Unveiled, and today we’re answering the extraordinary question; What if we proved the Devil? Are you a fiend for facts? Are you constantly curious?
Then why not subscribe to Unveiled for more clips like this one? And ring the bell for more fascinating content! Throughout theology, faith and cultural history, the exact identity and intention of the Devil is a complex and thorny issue. And various figures have assumed the title, without necessarily deserving it.
Take Hades, the Lord of the Underworld in ancient Greek mythology… He’s usually presented as the worst of the worst, but he’s only really there to watch over the souls of the dead and isn’t an explicitly evil figure. In fact, according to some representations, the Devil himself wasn’t actually evil at
First – but his evilness set in when he was cast out of heaven as a “fallen angel” after disagreements with God. Now, he mainly serves to tempt humanity into making selfish, dishonest and generally bad decisions – which, from some perspectives, means that the devil actually exists so that
Humankind can remain pure, by resisting his schemes. Many interpret the Devil’s first appearance in the Bible as when he takes the form of a serpent to convince Eve to eat the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, which she does,
Turning humankind into a race of sinners all the way up until the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. At other points, the Devil goes by Satan, a title originally given to the ruler of hell, otherwise known as the archangel of death Samael in Jewish texts.
But, in the three thousand years since the Old Testament was first written, the Devil has morphed many, many times, from a figure more simply in charge of punishing those who give in to sinful temptation, to the ultimate personification of evil itself.
So, given that there are so many conflicting ideas about who or what he is and why he even exists, how could the devil ever be explicitly proven? Well, if he plays to type, then he’s actually far more likely to just plain reveal himself than, say, God would be.
After all, making himself known to potential sinners, or appearing at times of extreme hardship, is kind of his “thing”. But, if he did suddenly show, then it could also, adversely, reaffirm the faith that millions of people have in God as well.
With proof of the ultimate evil, the belief that there’s also a supreme good would naturally strengthen. That said, proof that the devil exists might also be seen by some as the final confirmation that God doesn’t, or at least that God isn’t supreme, isn’t all-powerful and all-forgiving,
But can in fact be challenged – this is otherwise known as the Problem of Evil. Regardless, if the Devil (as well as Hell) was shown beyond doubt, back on plain old Planet Earth there’d be mass hysteria. In amongst the existential crises that millions of people would likely be experiencing after
Confirmation of a higher power, the terrible threat of eternal damnation and endless torture would now be confirmed – leaving people to decipher exactly what that means for their own lives… And placing all new, urgent meaning on defining the parameters of precisely what sends you to hell, and what doesn’t.
We’d see huge ethical questions debated as a matter of fact, but with widespread disagreement on what those facts are – seeing as the meaning of the devil would still rely on interpretation. The confusion and chaos could quickly trigger a major crime wave, with people throwing caution
To the wind, convinced that for one reason or another the devil will target them anyway. Of course, if the Devil’s appearance also confirms the existence of an overriding God, then there’d be no major cause for concern and humanity could still make it through the pearly gates.
Elsewhere, the Devil in real life could have a severe impact on law, order and justice all over the world – with even convicted criminals now able to blame the actual devil, in a bid to claim they’re not accountable for their actions. Already, people have used this defence with some degree of success.
Take the infamous “The Devil Made Me Do It” murder case in 1981, where Arne Cheyenne Johnson killed his landlord, blamed demonic possession, was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter but not murder, and served a shortened sentence of five years in prison. Johnson’s controversial case obviously played out without categorical evidence that the devil exists…
But, if Satan really stood among us we’d likely see lots more crimes justified as the devil’s work, and a probable collapse of the criminal justice system as lawyers scramble to find a way to prove whether or not a criminal really was influenced by the fallen deity who now definitely is real.
And it’s not as though we could simply call the devil to the stand to testify, given that he’s characterised – among other things – as persuasive, manipulative and untrustworthy. And so, with the devil at our door and hell on our doorstep, perhaps there’d be only
One solution; we’d need to somehow eliminate Satan, and in so doing stop all bad things from ever happening again. It’d be a tall order, but with the Devil out in the open it’d no longer feel such a massive leap to actually go to war with him.
United by the ultimate in common enemies, the world’s militaries could stage a global effort to rid humanity of its greatest and most dangerous villain. Could he ever be defeated, though? And could our armies ever match his? It’s hard to believe that anything, even an arsenal of nuclear weapons, could kill the Devil outright…
More likely we’d wind up eradicating ourselves in the crossfire, probably as part of our opponent’s cunning plan. Having inspired continent-wide battlefields of bloodshed and violence, we could also assume that the now-confirmed devil would bring with him plenty of other dangerous demons and nightmarish monsters – including vampires.
They’re pop culture powerhouses nowadays, but the vampire myth can be traced as far back as the story of Lilith, Adam’s first wife according to some texts, who becomes the consort of Samael, aka Satan. So, if the devil’s real, then vampires probably are too, and who knows what else!
Ouija boards are suddenly viable, and crucifixes are desperately weaponised as the end of days apparently draws near. If Satan truly showed himself, humanity would struggle to comprehend it at first, then struggle to adapt, and finally, possibly, fall into his trap. And that’s what would happen if we proved the Devil.

For thousands of years, people around the world have believed in the existence of Satan, an entity that is thought to be the embodiment of pure evil. But is Satan just a myth, a figment of our collective imagination? Or is he lurking, ready to tempt us and possess our souls?
Well, that is what we’ll try and find out. [music playing] [non-english singing] WILLIAM SHATNER (VOICEOVER): Jerusalem, Israel, the Holy Land. For thousands of years, religious pilgrims of many faiths have come to this sacred city to express their devotion to God. But just outside the walls of Jerusalem
Lies the Valley of Hinnom, an ancient place of unholy worship, where evil deeds were performed long ago in honor of God’s enemy, Satan. In the Book of Jeremiah, God reports through his prophet that people outside Jerusalem in a place called the Valley of Hinnom are sacrificing their sons and also their daughters.
And God explicitly says, I never asked you to do this satanic ritual, and expresses that he’s angry, that there’s going to be a terrible punishment for this. Historically speaking, in the days of the Bible, not everybody was faithful to the Lord. Satanism influenced the Israelite community.
And what they would do literally was they’d create a big pit of fire, and they actually would sacrifice their first-born male through the fire. This was performed in the Valley of Hinnom, which is actually the Hebrew word today for hell. I can’t imagine what would cause someone
To want to sacrifice their own child to anything for any reason, but this demonstrates how in antiquity, people believed that their crops wouldn’t grow, that the rains wouldn’t come, if they didn’t offer sacrifices up to some satanic demons, spirits, whatever. And now you have introduced this new being
That’s responsible for the bad things, and his name comes to be Satan. WILLIAM SHATNER (VOICEOVER): What can explain the shocking events that took place in the Valley of Hinnom thousands of years ago? Was it simply the result of human wickedness? Or is it possible that, as the biblical accounts suggest,
Satan and his demons were and still are real entities that have the power to influence people? Some people think of Satan as Beelzebub or Lucifer or the Prince of Darkness or the Evil One or Old Nick. And some of these names come from scripture. A lot of them come from folklore.
And if you think of Satan as this ubiquitous figure who’s constantly tormenting and tempting people, then it makes sense that the devil can be known by all of these different nicknames. Is there really a character of the Satan? Well, the definition of that is going to differ between the major world religions.
But fear of an eternal damnation in the afterlife has always been sufficient to keep people religious and in line with the beliefs of their religious clerics, who warn them that failure to comply will lead to an eternity of suffering in damnation. Or in other words, the stories from which this developed
Were to teach moral lessons. Throughout history, many religions have interpreted the world through the lens of having a figure of evil, Satan, who is responsible for evil in the world. According to Christian tradition, Satan was one of the most powerful and beautiful of the angels. He rebelled against God.
A third of the angels sided with Satan, and there was a war in heaven. Satan lost and was cast down into hell. Satan is the embodiment of evil, a fallen angel who tempts you to not follow your best values. He is a god of sorts, and he can offer
Something like that to us– great knowledge, control, mastery, the stuff of transcendence. Of course, it will cost us everything. After all, this is not a straight shooter. This is not somebody who’s going to tell the truth. His job is to tempt you. CHRIS BADER: Satan is believed to have tried
To tempt Jesus when he was in the desert with visions of earthly delights. So Satan is continually throughout the Bible someone trying to draw people from God to evil.
Only a select few priests in the Catholic Church are trained in exorcisms, and they’re prepared for a rare and terrifying event – demonic possession. Over thousands of years, the Church has collected a bestiary of the most terrifying demons they’ve ever encountered.
So which of these demons are the worst of the worst – and which are more like the annoying neighbor who won’t leave? From least to most terrifying, it’s time to open the Church’s book of demons. #11. Ben Tamalion
An obscure demon who appears in Jewish mythology before the rise of the Catholic church, he only appeared once. A powerful emperor ruled his kingdom with an iron fist, and passed harsh laws against the Jewish people. Then, one day, his daughter began behaving oddly – and it was soon clear that she was
Possessed by some sort of supernatural being. Among the other rantings that came out of the possessed girl, she began chanting the name of a famous Rabbi in the kingdom, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. The emperor was desperate, and he decided to call upon this rabbi.
The Rabbi entered the princess’ chamber, and was prepared for a battle with the demon – but it wasn’t to be. As soon as he yelled “Ben Tamalion, Go! Ben Tamalion, Go!”, the demon absconded. The Princess was safe, the emperor was grateful, and he repealed the anti-Jewish laws.
So not only did Ben Tamalion not hurt anyone, but he left when asked politely by a man of God – and left the kingdom a better place thanks to his influence. Ben Tamalion is one step above a wacky guest-star on a sitcom who teaches everyone a lesson about tolerance.
This next demon could be dangerous – if he could be bothered. #10. Belphegor Belphegor is a powerful demon, one of the seven princes of hell and a representation of one of the seven deadly sins. His specific sin? Sloth, which means his skills at possession might not be quite as ruthless as his brothers.
He specializes in temptation, which means that once he gets into someone’s body, he’s more likely to make them lazy and cause them to slack off at their work. Sure, there’s a risk that this guy will get you fired, but otherwise he’s more likely to cause a few bad days until he gets bored.
Where his danger lies is in how persuasive he is. He’s one of the easier demons to summon – since his sacrificial offering is excrement, and there’s never any shortage of that lying around. He likes to suggest get-rich-quick schemes to people to lure them in, and he’s appeared
In multiple plays and novels as a trickster-style demon. Some of his most famous exploits involve testing people’s marriages and searching for a mate of his own. As a high demon, he might be harder for an exorcist to shake off – but many of his victims might not even know they’re possessed.
This next demon is much more aggressive. #9. Andras Among exorcists, Andras is known to strike fear. This winged demon has the head of an owl, the body of a human, and rides around on a fearsome wolf. When he possesses a human, he’s notoriously hard to shake.
In hell, he commands thirty infernal demons and was notorious for striking out and killing the conjurer who summoned him if they weren’t suitably protected. A Great Marquis of Hell, he was known as a fearsome opponent, and driving him out of a human was a dangerous task.
But was he dangerous to just leave there? While Andras is a dangerous demon, his primary tactic once he was possessing someone was simply to sow discord. He would talk to his host, trying to convince them to strike out at their enemies, and even give them advice on how to kill them.
This makes Andras not much more than that annoying voice in your head that gives you bad advice. Sure, it might be hard to have him along for the ride long term, but eventually you just get used to it and say “Shut up, Andras” every time he tries to get you to murder the
Office lunch thief. This next demon is dangerous – but maybe only one day of the week. #8. Aquiel A minor demon, Aquiel is assigned by the big guy in Hell to preside over Sundays – the holiest day in the Christian calendar.
And as a demon, he has exactly one purpose – to desecrate the Christian sabbath by any means necessary. That means if he possesses you, he could easily get you to do all sorts of horrible things on Sunday. Vandalizing a church! Making all your employees work so they can’t spend time with their family!
Stealing all the newspapers’ color comic sections, maybe? But there’s one reason he’s not the worst demon to be possessed by. For six days out of seven, your life is likely to be pretty normal. What does Aquiel have to do with the other six days of the week? Nothing!
Someone possessed by Aquiel can foil the demon pretty easily – go about their life for six days of the week, and arrange for a friend to lock you up in a cage or tie you up on Sunday, similar to the way werewolves are contained on the night of the full moon in
Horror movies. Sure, you’ll lose one day of the week, but Aquiel won’t be able to get you involved in anything illegal and he basically naps the other six days. Another demon has a lot of hype – but might not live up to it. #7. Azazel
If you ask people what they know about Azazel, they’ll probably think he’s one of the most terrifying demons out there. After all, the media has portrayed him as a yellow-eyed agent of destruction. But in reality, Azazel’s actual role is far more mundane.
He’s a fallen angel like Lucifer, and one with a pretty ugly duty. Traditionally, communities would atone for their sins by transferring them into a goat that would then be sent off to be sacrificed. And the executioner would be none other than Azazel. So what would this horned demon actually do with a possession?
Well, the odds are if you were possessed by Azazel, it would be because it’s his time to do his duty and collect the literal scapegoat. He’s also known for introducing humans to forbidden knowledge in Christian mythology, which means he might spend some time tempting people in your body.
But he’s not known for violence or for harming the people he possesses. As a powerful and ancient demon, he would likely be one of the hardest to shake – which is why it might be best to just let him do his job and move on.
This next demon might be a little too much of a good thing. #6. Asmodeus Another prince of demons, Asmodeus represents lust among the seven deadly sins – and he’s notorious for coming to earth to indulge his carnal desires. The odds are if he possesses someone, they’re about to undergo the supernatural version
Of the Hangover series – waking up after their possession with some scars they don’t remember getting, three different wedding rings on their finger, a warrant out for their arrest, and a feeling that they just relived their wildest college fraternity days. But Asmodeus’ lust sprees have a dark side.
The demon is driven by pure, unrestrained lust – and that can manifest itself in jealousy. Asmodeus is notorious for killing the spouses of women he desires, and so someone possessed by him could easily wind up charged with murder.
Asmodeus might as well be the patron demon of Las Vegas – when you get possessed by him, you’re rolling the dice between one hell of a weekend and a very rude wake-up call. Fortunately, he’s also fairly easy to banish – he hates water, birds, and fish guts.
Might want to hold the exorcism at the seashore. Some demons are less infamous for what they do than for what they don’t. #5. Surgat Not much is known about Surgat, a minor demon mentioned in a book of magic and lore supposedly written by Pope Honorius.
He was a notorious Pope who liked to test fate by summoning demons himself – all so he could learn the tricks of banishing them back down to hell. He believed he would eventually be called upon to fight Satan himself, and he was practicing by taking on his minions.
But there was one minion he couldn’t shake. Surgat is the only demon in the book whose banishing ritual is not discussed. That’s because he was the only demon to stump Pope Honorius. He couldn’t be shaken, and that led the Pope to give him an eerie nickname – “He who opens all locks”.
When one of the most powerful exorcists to ever live can’t solve this minor demon, it stands to reason he’s one you don’t want to find hitching a ride in your body. Should you be worried about this next demon? That depends on who you are. #4. Ronove
A high-ranking Marquis of Hell, Ronove was powerful and commanded twenty legions of demons. But his actual interests were more benevolent – he fancied himself a teacher, and everyone who finds themselves possessed by him learns languages, rhetoric, and the skill of persuasion.
This small, staff-holding demon seems to want to create more evangelists for hell, and views humans more as convenient tools than something to torture. But if you’re of a certain age, you might not survive a meeting with this demon. For most young people, a meeting with Ronove could be enriching.
For the elderly or sick, it could be fatal. Ronove has a second, deadly duty – the taking of old souls, making him a demonic version of the grim reaper. While he never kills anyone directly, should he possess an elderly person or animal, they’re likely to die very soon after.
But even more dangerously, those who are around the possessed person are also likely to die if they’re vulnerable. So maybe don’t visit grandma when Ronove comes knocking. This next demon has been the cause of many awkward situations. #3. Agares
A surprising number of demons take on the role of teacher, but few of them are as persuasive as Agares. Appearing as either an old man riding a crocodile – or an incredibly beautiful woman – this Duke of Hell is good at getting people to let him in.
And once he’s in, he has a specific interest he can’t wait to teach – language. Agares is a demon with knowledge of every language under the sun, but he has a specific interest in the most profane and obscene words around.
Learning curse words might sound like every little boy’s dream, but some of Agares’ favorite words shouldn’t be heard by anyone. And it just gets worse from there. Agares has multiple powers, including reportedly the ability to cause earthquakes. He commands thirty-one legions of demons, but his most dangerous ability is a subtle one.
He has the power to force runaways – or anyone who has left home – to return to their origin. This doesn’t seem that bad – until you remember that he has you return to your parents’ home, spewing horrible curse words from lost languages, and he then might just cause a
Fault line to appear right under your old home. But few demons create the fear this next one does. #2. Beelzebub Beelzebub, the lord of the flies, is a high-ranking prince of hell – but what sin does he represent? Some say he represents pride, some say he represents gluttony, and others claim he’s
The prince of false gods. Christian lore says he fell alongside Lucifer, making him one of the first demons. While some traditions place him as the lord of hell himself, most believe he’s just below him in the hierarchy – which makes him one of the most dangerous demons to be possessed by.
And history shows he’s one to be feared. Past incidents of possession, such as the mass possession of a nunnery in the 1600s, show that not only is Beelzebub hard to drive out, but his possession can spread. His victims show great hostility and can become violent, making him one of the hardest demons
To banish. And as the lord of the flies, it’s not surprising that his possessions are associated with mysterious manifestations of insects. So not only would being possessed by Beelzebub be a long-term thing and hard to end, but you might wind up with flies in your teeth. And there’s one demon still above him.
#1. Lucifer The lord of Hell. The original fallen angel. Satan himself. He’s the most feared figure in Christian mythology – so why are there so few reports of him possessing people? The late Father Gabriele Amorth, the founder of the International Association of Exorcists,
Claimed to confront Lucifer himself in a 1997 exorcism, but there’s no way to prove if it was the genuine article. While the other demons serve him, the man himself rarely makes an appearance. After all, why would a boss do the minions’ job?
And that ambiguity might be the scariest thing about a possession by Lucifer. Exorcists have very little information about how to banish him because of how few times he’s appeared, and the few successful exorcisms have been long and difficult.
If Lucifer comes out of hiding, the odds are he has a reason – and Christian mythology hints that direct involvement of the Lord of Hell in human affairs might be a sign of the end times. That means if Lucifer possesses you, he might just be planning to use you to kick off the
End of days. For more on the ultimate evil, check out “50 Things You Didn’t Know About Satan”, or “How the Devil Was Born” for his secret origin.
When you think about activities commonly seen at a preschool, things like naps, games, and Play-Doh sculptures probably come to mind. One thing that definitely would not is boiling and eating babies. At least, not unless you grew up in the 1980s, when reports of daycare centers engaging in
Satanic rituals were widely circulated and readily believed. People went to jail for years based on little more than a widespread conviction that the devil’s minions were corrupting—and sometimes devouring—our children. It was a mass hysteria that grew to include Oprah, the Smurfs, and
Even McDonald’s. It’s the story of satanic panic, and it’s next on this installment of Throwback. Welcome back to the series where we take a deep dive into some of the most fascinating pop culture stories and events you might remember from your childhood.
I’m your host, Erin McCarthy, and this episode is a bit of a departure from the fun stories we’ve been telling you about how your favorite toys and games came to be. Satanic panic was a phenomenon that swept North America, and at the height of the craze,
You basically couldn’t open up the newspaper or turn on the news without hearing about subliminal messages hidden in rock music, pagan symbols in cartoons, or criminal trials involving teachers engaging in human sacrifice. As outlandish as all of this seems now, it was a very real concern
Back then thanks to a mixture of urban legends, unqualified experts, and an overzealous media. And while no babies were actually eaten, the whole ordeal still managed to ruin a lot of lives. If there was any biggest cause of satanic panic,
It may have been a book that came out of the otherwise eminently rational country of Canada. That’s right: the same place that gave us international treasures Michael J. Fox and Celine Dion also opened the door to a decade of demonic conspiracies. Here’s how.
It’s fair to say that Satan was kind of a big deal in the 1970s. Novelist William Peter Blatty scored a huge hit in 1971 with The Exorcist, a story of demonic possession that Blatty claimed was loosely inspired by a real exorcism performed by the Catholic Church. The book was followed
By a film adaptation in 1973 that continued those claims and was so shocking that there were reports of people fainting during screenings. Films like The Omen and The Amityville Horror followed, placing the focus squarely on paranormal events that used religious iconography
To make their stories more believable. Thanks to figures like Charles Manson, ritualized evil didn’t seem that far-fetched. And with the general public having some idea of the occult, it wasn’t hard for them to believe in a story involving satanism and abuse. That set the stage
For the 1980 book Michelle Remembers, where a psychiatrist named Lawrence Pazder detailed what he claimed was the true story of patient Michelle Smith, an adult who underwent over 600 hours of hypnosis to recall long-repressed memories of being involved in a satanic cult as a child.
With shocking stories of abuse, sacrifice, and demonic rituals, Michelle Remembers caused a stir and was widely seen as a legitimate chronicle of a horrific underground movement. But there was a problem. While Pazder insisted Michelle Smith’s memories were genuine,
They didn’t stand up to closer scrutiny. She said rituals took place in a cemetery in Victoria, Canada, in the 1950s. But no residents ever reported anything strange happening there. She also said priests in this cult had to lop off a finger,
But no one in Victoria remembered anyone walking around missing a digit. Even though reporters expressed some doubts about Pazder’s book, it went on to become a huge success and may have made subsequent reports of satanic activity more plausible
In the eyes of the public. And there would be a lot of those reports in the years to come. One of the most common myths during the height of satanic panic was the idea that family-friendly corporations were secretly in league with the devil.
These urban legends actually predate Michelle Remembers in some cases, and the earliest victim may have been Ronald McDonald. In October 1978, McDonald’s felt compelled to publicly announce that franchise founder Ray Kroc was not a financial supporter of the Church of Satan.
The story started when McDonald’s got a letter from a woman in Ohio asking why Kroc donated 20 percent of the company’s profits to a satanic cause. McDonald’s dismissed the question as silly until more letters started coming in along the same lines. Before long, bags of letters demanding
To know why the Golden Arches were part of a demonic cabal were arriving, and the company was forced to comment on what was probably their worst PR problem until the arrival of the McPizza. According to the Reverend John McFarland of the Kenmore Church of God in Akron, Ohio,
A parishioner told him that she saw Ray Kroc admit to being a supporter of the Church of Satan on The Phil Donahue Show. McFarland was shocked. He hadn’t seen the show for himself, but he took her at her word and published details in the church’s newsletter, Moments of Sunshine. Pretty soon,
The story was in other church newsletters. Like a game of telephone, it spiraled out of control, with some believing that Kroc gave the Church of Satan 50 percent of the company’s profits. Because people were opposed to the idea of buying Happy Meals if part of the proceeds
Went to the Church of Satan, McDonald’s sent executives out to churches with sworn statements from television executives insisting Kroc never said those things. He actually was on The Phil Donahue Show in May 1977, and the episode was repeated in June 1978, but at no point did he
Express a desire to financially support devil worship. McFarland published a retraction in his newsletter, but that didn’t get nearly as much attention as the original rumor. Another major company to suffer from hearsay was Procter & Gamble,
The famous household products corporation. Take a look at their old logo and you’ll see 13 stars. Starting in 1980, word began to spread that the stars were secretly the mark of the devil. So many people believed this that Procter & Gamble actually set up a toll-free number for consumers
To call and hear a recording reassuring them that their laundry soap was not being used to support Satan. The stars were actually chosen back in 1882 to represent the country’s original 13 colonies. Thanks to the rumor, however, Procter & Gamble soon got rid of the century-old logo.
Throughout the 1980s, a number of children’s characters were accused of being in league with the devil, or at least with what some called heathen gods. ThunderCats was purportedly intended to promote Eastern mysticism; the He-Man and Snake Mountain playset supposedly invoked demonic
Imagery because kids could use a microphone to deepen their voices and pretend to be evil; the Smurfs were blue and had black lips. That could be construed as being corpse-like, making the Smurfs members of the undead. Or, I guess, to be technical,
Members of the smurf-dead. Not even Rainbow Brite was safe. According to some interpretations, the beauty mark on her cheek was actually a pentagram. But no toy or game took more of a beating than Dungeons and Dragons. First released in 1974, the
Tabletop game put players in the roles of heroes and sorcerers using magic spells to face off against various monsters. For those who believed popular culture was steeped in satanic messaging, this was all the proof they needed. The controversy grew even stronger in 1979,
When a 16-year-old Michigan State University college student named James Egbert disappeared. Friends told authorities he was a fan of Dungeons and Dragons, which somehow led to investigators becoming convinced he had gotten lost in the underground steam tunnels near the college after
Getting too immersed in a gaming session. The truth wasn’t quite so sensational, but it was tragic. Among other things, Egbert was apparently stressed over having advanced so far in school at such a young age. He was dealing with personal problems and had decided to run away.
Sadly, he died by suicide not long after. But the story of his becoming obsessed with the game persisted, and a made-for-television movie called Mazes and Monsters was produced in 1982 that kept the narrative alive. Inspired by the Egbert case, it was one of the first starring
Roles for an aspiring actor named Tom Hanks. Parents grew so concerned over Dungeons and Dragons that one even formed a group called BADD, or Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons. The controversy hardly dissuaded people from playing the game, though. In 1982, TSR, which manufactured
The game and its accessories, sold $16 million in rulebooks. For some, panic meant profit. Even if you’re not familiar with satanic panic, you’ve probably heard of the idea that certain songs played backward in a technique known as backmasking reveal subliminal messages. Rock music was especially susceptible to those accusations in the 1980s,
When bands like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones were charged with hiding their support of the devil in their records. The whole concept of satanic messages being audible when music is played backward probably has roots in the work of Aleister Crowley. The
Infamous early 20th century occultist advised that you could train yourself to think backwards by, among other things, learning to speak backwards and even listening to phonograph records in reverse. In the case of one band, the possibility of hidden lyrics led to a lawsuit. In December 1985, two friends, 18-year-old Raymond Belknap
And 20-year-old James Vance, ended a night of drinking by agreeing to a suicide pact. Belknap died, while Vance was left with severe injuries. Vance’s parents sued the band Judas Priest for $6.2 million because both young men had been fans of their music and rumors persisted
That hidden messages like “do it” and “let’s be dead” were buried in songs like “Better by You, Better Than Me.” The civil case went to court in 1990, with audio experts playing the songs backward and forward at different speeds. Ultimately, a judge ruled that the plaintiffs
Didn’t prove subliminal messages were deliberately placed on the album and the band wasn’t liable. In fact, it’s not really possible to write lyrics that can make sense when played both normally and backwards. When words or phrases are apparently discernible when something’s played in reverse,
It’s really just the brain trying to make sense of gibberish. That might be why when two evangelists from Ohio insisted in 1986 that the theme song to the 1960s television sitcom Mr. Ed contained demonic messages like “the source is Satan” and “someone heard this song for Satan,”
Even they admitted it probably wasn’t done by the producers on purpose. As silly as some of these examples are, satanic panic also led to some very serious and life-altering consequences. In 1983, one mother accused an employee of the McMartin preschool in Manhattan Beach,
California, of molesting her child, triggering a massive investigation that went back two decades and eventually grew to include seven employees of the preschool and 360 children who said they had been abused. As the investigation continued, the claims of the children grew increasingly bizarre. Some said a teacher flew through the air.
Others claimed they were forced to witness the sacrifice of other children. At the heart of this sensational story was Children’s Institute International, a child advocacy group that was responsible for interviewing kids about their traumatic experiences. While their approach to interviewing the children was not ostensibly intended to be
Coercive, many of the kids heard declarative statements like “we know what happened, just tell us,” and felt compelled to repeat or make up stories of abuse, including details of satanic worship. If they refuted allegations, they might be told they were too scared to talk.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times in 2005, one man, now an adult, reflected back on his experience with investigators as a child. He said that he would be asked questions over and over again until he learned to give them the answer they wanted. And because he had siblings in
The McMartin school, he wanted them to be safe. To a kid, it felt like doing the right thing. Many of these interviewing techniques were later discredited. No physical evidence was ever produced to support the kids’ claims, and some later
Admitted to lying in order to tell authorities what they thought they wanted to hear. But at the time, the McMartin case was being used as a template. Other places, like Rogers Park Day Care, had employees arrested over accusations that they boiled and ate infants. Social workers
Involved in the McMartin case were cited as experts in such cases, lending them credibility. At least one police department even had a pamphlet for law enforcement to use when investigating suspected ritualistic criminal activity. The McMartin case lasted six years,
The longest and most expensive trial in the history of California up to that time. One of the “experts” consulted on the case was actually Lawrence Pazder, author of Michelle Remembers. In the end, the defendants were all exonerated, but one, an employee named Ray Buckey,
Served five years in prison before the charges against him were dismissed. In a separate case with even more disastrous consequences, Dan and Fran Keller of Texas served nearly 22 years following convictions in a case that included accusations they served blood to children in their daycare, among other horrible acts. They
Were eventually released and declared innocent. The fallout doesn’t end there. There’s also been an untold mental toll on the children who were forced to discuss these gruesome scenes, as well as parents who spent years believing their children had been assaulted. All of it was due to
A strong belief that kids were being subjected to horrible atrocities that didn’t actually exist. Satanic panic persisted through the end of the 1980s, with television personalities like Oprah Winfrey and Geraldo Rivera devoting air time to the topic. Always one for subtlety,
Geraldo estimated that over one million Satanists were lurking in communities across the country, perpetuating the fear of the devil being just around the corner. But after the McMartin case was debunked and the Department of Justice stated that there’s never been any evidence of any ritualistic
Satanic sex abuse cults, the idea seemed to evaporate. Concerned parents went on to worry about other things, like violent video games. So why did satanic panic endure for as long as it did? Some people believe it was a textbook case of mass hysteria, not unlike the Salem witch trials.
Urban legends were able to take on a new strength because children were seemingly in danger. Other times, a lack of evidence meant people could believe what they wanted. After all, there was no proof Ray Kroc didn’t donate to the Church of Satan.
And while it might sound odd now, we’re still telling a lot of the same stories today, from killer clowns to strangers lurking in backseats. Our next episode will be about a much more fun topic, I promise. And if you have an idea for a future episode of Throwback,
Pop it in the comments below. I’m Erin McCarthy. Thanks for watching.
God and the Devil, are the two fundamental patterns of human existence. The path of light: good, truth, beauty, life, heaven, and salvation, and the path of darkness: evil, deception, betrayal, negation of life, hell, and damnation. The reality of evil is a source of deep and
Uncanny fascination. In fact, it seems that while many of us choose good over evil, some of us cannot help but to fall into the temptation of doing evil. Nothing is easier than to denounce the evil doer. Nothing more difficult than understanding him. We must be aware of the evil
Within, so as not to fall prey to its effects. When we merely identify ourselves with the good and deny our capacity for evil, we inevitably project it unto other people. It takes control of us as an autonomous power, often clearly visible to others, if not to us. The Devil has a character
Of an autonomous personality which is greater than man’s consciousness and greater than his will. When you point a finger to someone, three fingers point back to you. The only reality is that everyone is capable of evil, and the proper moral position is knowing evil, choosing not to do evil.
Belief in demons occur historically throughout the world. They are typically seen as malevolent supernatural entities. The daimons of the ancient Greeks, however, are divided into good and evil categories: agathodaimōn and kakodaimōn. The former is a guardian angel or tutelary figure which mediates between men and gods, while the latter is the adversarial demon.
The daimon is a higher spirit constantly aware of its intimate connection with other human beings, with nature, and with the entire cosmos. When our inner daimon is in a state of good order, we experience eudaimonia, a state of good spirit and fulfilment. However,
The kakodaimōn brings trouble and distracts us from our path towards wholeness. The Devil resembles the fauns and satyrs of Greek and Roman mythology, the latter of whom were companions of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, intoxication, and festivity. On the other hand, the Greek god Pan is associated with the wilderness, goats, shepherds,
Fertility and music. There is a general theme of worldly pleasures in these mythical beings. The word panic derives from Pan, who was the source of mysterious sounds that caused contagious fear in herds and panic attacks in people who frequented lonely places. While in
Fear we know what threatens us and our perceptions become sharper to overcome the danger, in anxiety, we are threatened without knowing what steps to take to meet the dangers, and instead of becoming sharper, our perceptions generally become blurred or vague. Pandemonium (literally, “all demons”),
Which refers to wild uproar, confusion, and chaos, was first coined by English poet John Milton to describe the capital city of Hell in his epic poem Paradise Lost. These words have remained in our language and still best define the destructive confusion that the Devil and his
Minions can cause in our world and in ourselves. In the Bible, sheep are considered loyal followers of the Son of God, metaphorically a shepherd. Goats, on the other hand, are disobedient and difficult. Goats were used in rituals of atonement, as the bearer of the sins
Of the nation, and were let free to supposedly carry the evil into the wilderness. This is where the term scapegoating comes from, a psychological process in which others are singled out and take unwarranted blame for something. People use others as a scapegoat to hide their own greatest defects.
This projection often happens unconsciously because of repressed shadow traits: envy, anger, guilt, lust, etc. Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung makes a profound statement: “This is the deeper meaning of the fact that Christ as the redeemer was crucified between
Two thieves. These thieves in their way were also redeemers of mankind, they were the scapegoats.” In “shadow projection”, one is tied to others in hatred; the lower classes, racial and national minorities, and other faiths are likely to become targets of repressed psychic contents. The shadow
Is the unknown part of ourselves, which becomes the dark side of our personality when it is ignored. None of us stand outside humanity’s black collective shadow. It is a truism of life that when negative aspects of ourselves are not recognised as belonging to us on the inside,
They appear to act against us on the outside. To be accused of something you did not do is painful, and this lie creates a wound that can fester for years. When we do something unexpected, we say, “I don’t know what the devil got into me!” The Devil is a useful scapegoat.
By contrast, in “saviour projection”, one is tied to the other person not in hatred, but in blind and uncritical adoration. Such a leader frequently develops a god complex. Leaders can turn into god-like figures because of their promises to save the nation from poverty, famine,
And misery. They are the symbolic carriers of the unconscious of millions of people. The Devil goes by many names: Satan, Lucifer, The Great Beast, Beelzebub, The Prince of Darkness. He is the adversary, the accuser, the tempter, the deceiver, and the one who divides from God.
The Devil is incredibly wicked and evil, but also intelligent and witty – he is the father of all tricksters – that is what makes him so dangerous. The English word “devil” derives from the Greek diábolos (“the one who divides”). Diabolic is the term in contemporary English. The Greek verb dia-bollein literally means to
Tear apart. The antonym to the diabolic is the “symbolic”, which comes from sym-bollein (to put together or unite). American existentialist psychologist Rollo May writes: “The symbolic is that which draws together, ties, integrates the individual in himself and with his group; the diabolic, in contrast, is that which disintegrates and tears apart.”
When a community forms, it can be a source of brotherly love, to “love thy neighbour as thyself”. The Devil, on the other hand, scatters and produces discord. The scattering is a sign of the darker power, whether it be the division of communities, families,
Or culture. Hence, “divide and conquer”, or “united we stand, divided we fall”. Rollo May identifies three characteristics of the diabolic which are as relevant today if not more than they were in the past: love of nudity, violence, and division.
Whereas before nudity and the aspects of the body were private and reserved for the sacred act of sexual union within marriage, now clothing is intended to call attention to the private areas of the body. The overall sexualisation of culture also ties in with this aspect, exacerbated by the
Ease of access technology provides to unfulfilled desires of lust. In terms of violence, the 20th century marked some of the most devastating events in human history, and who knows what awaits us in the future. Finally, the Devil loves to divide. These divisions occur in almost every facet of
Our lives: race, sex, religion, politics, and economics. The demonic is an inversion of order. The growth of the peculiarly Western view of exploitation, materialism and man’s ego as being at the centre of life, is a by-product of the diabolic. Thus,
Man has become alienated from himself. Perhaps most relevant to our times, the devil appears as virtual reality promising a utopia outside of physical existence, or artificial intelligence that has knowledge far superior than humanity, engineered to become humanity’s saviour, and yet without consciousness has no empathy. This division not only occurs externally, but
Internally too, as split personality. When Jesus spoke to the Gerasene demoniac and asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion: for we are many.” A legion meant three to six thousand soldiers. The possessed man, having been overwhelmed by unconscious forces,
No longer has an ego which functions as an anchor to reality, resulting in schizophrenia. Making a deal with the devil is a universal theme which appears many times in works of popular culture. Sometimes the deal is done at a crossroads,
Which symbolically represents liminality, a place “neither here nor there”, where two realms touch: the physical and the spiritual. The deal frequently begins with a mortal desiring some worldly good such as youth, love, knowledge, wealth, fame or power, but in exchange,
He must sell his soul to the devil. This is exemplified in the German legend of Faust, based on the elusive figure of Johann Georg Faust, a German alchemist, astrologer and magician. After the Devil serves him with his magic powers for a number of set years, the term of the
Contract ends, and the Devil carries him off to Hell. In early tales, Dr. Faust is irrevocably damned because he prefers human knowledge and material gain over divine or spiritual knowledge. This is known as the Faustian bargain. In Goethe’s Faust, one of the greatest works of
German literature, Faust is a scholar who becomes depressed because of the uselessness of human knowledge, and turns to magic for discovering the ultimate truth. However, his attempts fail. Frustrated, he no longer wants to live. In his desperate moment, a dog appears, which transforms
To the Devil’s servant, Mephistopheles. He tells Faust that he will become his servant on Earth and show him the pleasures of life. At first Faust refuses. Then Mephistopheles makes a wager: if he should ever experience a moment of ultimate bliss on Earth so that he would beg for that moment to
Continue, he would instantly die and serve the Devil in Hell. Faust, who believes he cannot lose his bet, because he will never be satisfied, and thus never experience the “great moment”, accepts the deal and a blood pact is made. Ultimately, Faust experiences a moment of
Bliss and dies. However, as Mephistopheles is about to claim his soul, Faust is saved by God’s grace. Though he was never satisfied and dies before he could realise his vision of a kingdom of heaven on earth, Faust learns to find happiness in progress, not just accomplishment.
He never gave into lust or idleness, but was focused on justice, prosperity, love, and the improvement of the lives of his people. This constant striving ultimately saves his soul. Interestingly, this wouldn’t have been possible without the Devil’s attempts to have Faust live a wicked and sinful life. The Devil’s persistence to tempt Faust,
And Faust’s unwillingness to give in, leads to his spiritual enlightenment and salvation. As the Austrian poet Rilke wrote in one of his letters after withdrawing from psychotherapy: “If my devils are to leave me, I am afraid my angels will take flight as well.”
We cannot have one without the other. We have both an angel, representing conscience, and a devil, representing temptation. Our inner devils resemble our shadow, which retains contact with the lost depths of the soul, with life and vitality, and provides hints for
Self-realisation. As the saying goes, a man that casts no shadow is the devil himself. In the 1814 novella Peter Schlemihl, the protagonist sells his shadow to the devil for a magical bottomless purse full of gold, however, he finds out that without his shadow, he is shunned by others.
Italian violinist Giuseppe Tartini had a dream in which the devil appeared to him and asked to be his servant and teacher. Tartini gave him his violin to see if he could play, and the music was so wonderful that he had never conceived it in his boldest flights of fantasy.
He felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: his breath failed him, and he awoke. Immediately, he grasped his violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of his dream. It was all in vain. Despite having said that the music he composed is indeed the best that he ever wrote,
Which he named the “Devil’s Trill”, it was so inferior to what he had heard, that if he could have subsisted on other means, he would have broken his violin and abandoned music forever. The devil is an archetype (a collectively inherited pattern of behaviour),
And like all archetypes, fascinates us because of its numinosity. Identifying ourselves with an archetype can lead to our psychic destruction, causing ego-inflation, in which our sense of identity is excessively amplified, creating delusion and megalomania, and an overall self-destructive path. Archetypes are primitive and serve a realm close to the
Instincts, they are not necessarily concerned with ethical human values. It is as much the ego’s duty to bring a sense of moral responsibility to the archetypal images of the unconscious, as it is for us to tend to the welfare of our fellow humans in the outside world. The key is
Not identification but integration. Jung writes: “The images of the unconscious place a great responsibility upon a man. Failure to understand them, or a shirking of ethical responsibility, deprives him of his wholeness and imposes a painful fragmentariness on his life.”
In Christianity, the voice of temptation appears at the very beginning of time, represented as the serpent in the Garden of Eden, which was later equated with the Devil. The serpent’s role was to tempt Adam and Eve, the first humans, to eat of the fruit of the tree that God prohibited,
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because it would open their eyes to reality and they would become like gods. The most dangerous lies contain half-truths. The serpent promises good things, and purposefully avoids speaking about the evil that will befall them.
Thus, Eve plucks the fruit, eats it, and gives some to Adam. They immediately become ashamed of their nakedness and experience guilt and anxiety. The sin of pride, to become like God, appears as the first act of disobedience, leading to the original sin of mankind,
And the fall from Paradise. In a similar myth, the Greek god Prometheus steals the fire from heaven for the benefit of mankind and is punished by the gods. Myths are not mere stories or superstition, but perennial patterns that express the human
Condition. Psychologically, we can view these two myths as the development of consciousness in the human being, which is always followed by feelings of transgression, guilt and punishment. We are born integrated, in a state of original wholeness (paradise), and as we grow up,
Become self-aware and acquire the ego, we experience disintegration or the fall from paradise. We go from living under the comforting and nourishing circle of the mother, to having to leave the nest of comfort. If we do not throw ourselves into the fire of life, we cannot become
Reintegrated and regain our relationship with our natural state of being. Since wholeness only has meaning when we reunite our fragmented self, this event is also described as felix culpa (fortunate fall or happy fault). Without a fall, we cannot experience redemption. Disintegration represents
The necessary condition for all self-realisation. Before delving deeper into the psychology of the devil, we must first explore the different meanings behind the names Lucifer, and Satan. Lucifer (the light-bringer) is the Latin name for the morning appearances of planet Venus
(the morning star), visible before sunrise. The planet also appears as the evening star, visible after sunset, depending on the phase of its orbit around the Sun. In Roman folklore, the morning star was personified as a male figure bearing a torch.
Stars were then regarded as living celestial beings. In myth, the morning star is interpreted as a heavenly being striving for the highest seat of heaven only to be cast down to the underworld. The morning star, one of the brightest objects in the sky, is filled with pride. After its
Brief declaration of victory, it is humbled and vanishes from sight when the all-powerful sun rises and floods everything in its light. The first reference to the morning star as an individual occurs in the Book of Isaiah: “How have you fallen from heaven, morning star,
Son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the
Stars of God”… But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.” Though this passage actually refers to the condemnation of an evil king of Babylon, it has been interpreted as an allegory of Satan’s fall from heaven. Considering pride as the major sin,
“to love oneself more than others and God”, Lucifer became synonymous with the Devil. Pride was not only what caused the fall of man from Paradise, but also what caused the Devil and his angels to rebel against God and be thrown out of heaven. This is described in
The apocalyptic Book of Revelation, where a past war occurs in heaven between angels led by the Archangel Michael against the rebel angels led by “the dragon”, or the Devil: “Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon,
And the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”
It wasn’t just a few angels who were on the side of the Devil, but a third of them who refused to unite their free will with the will of God, so they descended into hell as fallen angels. The sorrows of the Prince of Darkness are as immeasurable as
Eternity itself. Shut out of heaven, to hear all through the unending aeons the far-off voices of angels whom once he knew and loved, and to be a wanderer among deserts of darkness. Confusion arises when Jesus is also described as the morning star in the
Book of Revelation. However, he is described as the bright morning star. In other words, the Devil’s light is a poor imitation of the real light of the world, and while both were called morning star, only one of them represents authentic light. It is
No coincidence that the Devil disguises himself as an angel of light, for he is a deceiver. The Devil is also given the name “Satan”, which means adversary or accuser. He is the one who sets a stone in your path where you least want it, and blames you for your failure.
In the Book of Job, God’s most faithful servant, Job, is a righteous man who honours God, and has been blessed with health, family, and wealth. In Heaven, God asks Satan about his opinion of Job’s piety. Satan says that his servant is only faithful to him because he has
Been blessed with prosperity, but if he would have everything valuable taken away from him, he would surely suffer and curse God. Thus, Satan is given permission by God to test Job’s faith. “Satan is the destructive doubt within God’s personality;
Yet it has a mysterious existential necessity for God and man and their relation to each other.” Messengers come to tell Job that his animals, servants and children have been killed. Devastated, Job falls down to the ground and cries, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there; the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” Job remains strong in his faith. This time, Satan afflicts Job’s whole body with boils. As he lies down in excruciating pain, his wife tells him
To “curse God, and die.” But Job remains strong in his faith. Three of his friends come to him, weep, and sit down with him for seven days, and none spoke a word, for Job’s grief was very great.
After this, Job opens his mouth and curses the day he was born, and longs for the death that does not come. His friends cannot comprehend how a just God would punish an innocent and pious man. They think that his suffering must be well-deserved and accuse him of committing sin. Knowing his
Conscience was clear, Job grew weary of their accusations and calls them “miserable comforters”. Job moves from his pious attitude to berating God for his disproportionate and unjustified wrath. The wicked have power over the meek, and God does nothing to punish them. God answers Job’s
Cry and appears in a whirlwind. He describes the complexity of the world he has created. Carrying out justice in a world full of evil is complicated, and not black or white like Job and the friends seem to think. Just as there is order in the world, there is also chaos as seen
In the two creatures of Behemoth and Leviathan which God points to. We live in a world that is not designed to prevent suffering. Job trusts God’s wisdom despite his suffering. Finally, God honours Job’s struggle and honesty and his family and fortune is restored. He becomes
The archetypal faithful servant of God. The Book of Job, in comparison with the story of Paradise, represents a significant advance in God’s self-consciousness. Adam and Eve are expelled from God’s presence as if their knowledge of good and evil were an
Offense against the creator. In Job one begins to realise that this knowledge is fruitful when free will is combined with the infinite wisdom of God’s divine will. It is also interesting that in Job Satan acts in agreement with God, not behind his back like the serpent in Paradise.
Out of this astonishing self-reflection induced in God by Job’s stubborn righteousness, God develops empathy and love, and out of it a new relationship between God and humankind is born. God is pushed into a process of transformation that leads to His incarnation as Jesus Christ.
The crucifixion and death of Christ is the ultimate tragic story, where the worst of all punishments is inflicted upon the one who least deserved it. The answer to Job is given in the supreme moment of Christ’s despairing cry from the Cross, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken
Me?” God experiences what it means to be a mortal man and what he made his faithful servant Job suffer. When Jesus died on the cross, the devil celebrated his victory. But, in reality, it was the moment of his defeat. For he did not foresee the resurrection of Christ three days later.
The period between the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ is known as the Harrowing of Hell, where Christ descended into the underworld and brought salvation to the souls held captive there. Dante’s Divine Comedy, which portrays a midlife crisis in which we
Must descend to hell, is timed to parallel Jesus’ harrowing expedition. Jung writes: “Therefore, after his death Christ had to journey to Hell, otherwise the ascent to Heaven would have become impossible for him. Christ first had to become his Antichrist, his underworldly brother.”
Everyone’s story on the path to self-knowledge and spiritual awakening starts by descending into Hell. The formula of a journey to the dark domain of death in search of wisdom is universal. Just as an open wound that is left unattended slowly infects the whole body,
So too is sin like an open wound in the spirit, through which the demonic can get in and influence your mind. When someone tells God to get out of his or her life, it allows for the perfect opportunity to invite the devil, who will try to console the person and present himself
As one’s ally. Satanism is evil disguised as good. The demonic is hidden in secret. God tells us to be careful of going down the path of destruction, and stands in front of us blocking the way. It seems that he is not on our side, because we are not free,
And cannot do what we want to do. The Devil, on the other hand, appears to be on our side, and whispers to our ear: “just do what makes you happy, life is too short”, “times have changed,
We live in a new world with new rules”, “everyone else is doing it, why shouldn’t you?”, “you obey no one, and you are the God of yourself.” This is how the Devil talks, and when we experience ego-inflation, he smiles because it is only a matter of time till we join his kingdom of
Darkness. Pride comes before a fall. Satan thinks he is equal to God. Reality is revolved around him and it is his visions that matter above all, leading him to rebel against everyone who disagrees. Pride is the origin of all evil. Before we sin, God seems to be the accuser,
And the Devil our defender. However, after we sin, the roles are reversed, God becomes the defender, and the Devil the accuser. God is not a tyrant who says, “Do this or you’ll be punished”, but rather, “Do this because it will do you good.”
The diabolic can be invited indirectly as a result of a person’s actions; actions that lead to an increased susceptibility to demonic influence. This is especially terrifying when one is unconscious of it. More rarely, people engage in demonic subjection, voluntarily submitting to the Devil, as is typical of cults or deals with the devil.
Every pattern of sin is accepted and taken in, leading to contempt of others and the world. While there are cases of extraordinary activities of the demonic which can happen in very direct and frightening ways, such as demonic infestation (the presence of evil in a location, animal or object),
Demon vexation (physical attacks by a demon), and demon possession (when the demon takes complete control of a person’s body), we’ll be focusing on the psychological activities of the demonic. The line between demonic behaviour and mental health issues is blurry, and one has nothing
To lose by visiting both a psychologist and priest, for they are complementary to healing our soul and strengthening our spirit. Temptation is the ordinary activity of the devil. It is a real thing for us in each and every day. The gate that leads to destruction is broad
And many enter through it. But the gateway to peace is narrow, and none may enter save through affliction of the soul. The devil looks for cracks in one’s “spiritual armour” to try to enter in, the strength of which depends on what Aristotle called the “golden mean”, the point between a
Deficiency and an excess of a trait, such as confidence between self-deprecation and vanity. Temptation begins with deception, buying into the lies of the devil, who promises good, only to deliver evil. The goal of this is to create division or inner conflict in ourselves,
Paralysing our capacity to choose and causing us to spiral downward. In despair, we look for a substitute in life and numb ourselves with pleasure or diversion, which can lead to addiction. Hell is that state of mind which has abandoned itself so completely to a given sin
That it cannot act independently of that sin. By way of illustration, note the difference between the person who drinks, who even chooses to get drunk occasionally, and the alcoholic who has lost the power to choose, who cannot decide not to drink and who cannot decide to do
Anything but drink. What starts out as something “small” that one thought one had control of, becomes a problem that takes complete control of one’s life. When one is trapped in this state, it leads to obsessive behaviour, irrational thoughts, rumination, and self-blame. One falls into the
Vicious cycle of vice. What was believed to be the source of one’s freedom, becomes one’s prison. The Devil tells us that the party is over, and now we must suffer the consequences of our actions, and he fills us with despair. Frequently this creates oppression, a negative influence on
Loved ones and friends, leading to further alienation, and discouragement. When one loses everything that was valuable in one’s life, it leads to a loss of any sense of meaning, direction, or purpose in life. This is unbearable and people lose all desire to live.
“I don’t exist, the thoughts you are having is just you”, so speaks the Devil. Sometimes all we need is a helping hand that pulls us out of the quicksand. The Devil tempts us in what he thinks
Are areas of weakness in our lives, and while he cannot read our thoughts like an all-powerful God, he is an excellent observer. Therefore, if you are going to outwit the devil, it’s terribly important that you don’t give him any advance notice. In fairy tales,
It is the fool that often outwits the devil, usually unintentionally, because he possesses a purity of heart that cannot be corrupted. When the Devil identifies our weaknesses, we can also use this to our advantage, for we will know what to focus on.
For Jung, one way the devil can be represented is as a neurosis. He writes: “[The Devil] describes the grotesque and sinister side of the unconscious; for we have never really come to grips with it and consequently it has remained in its original savage state.
Probably no one today would still be rash enough to assert that the European is a lamblike creature and not possessed by a devil. The frightful records of our age are plain for all to see, and they surpass in hideousness everything that any previous age, with its feeble instruments,
Could have hoped to accomplish.” The Devil is the diabolical aspect of every psychic function that has broken loose from the hierarchy of the total psyche and now enjoys independence and absolute power. As such, our inner devils can be equated with the autonomous
Shadow. This rejection of the shadow occurs in childhood, where our animal instincts are usually punished by social institutions and conventional standards of behaviour (the superego). As we grow up, we suppress much of what we do or think about since it is deemed unacceptable. This leads to
Repression: our unacceptable traits return to the unconscious layer of personality, where it remains as the shadow. When it occasionally breaks through the barrier of repression, the shadow manifests itself in pathological ways. By denying our dark side, we neglect half of our
Existence as human beings. In mythology, the shadow appears personified in a figure of the same sex, as our “dark brother” who accompanies and clings to his “light” counterpart: Cain and Abel, Set and Osiris, Mephisto and Faust, and Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll.
Jungian analyst Erich Neumann writes: “By accepting evil, modern man accepts the world and himself in the dangerous double nature which belongs to them both. This self-affirmation is to be understood in the deepest sense as an affirmation of our human totality,
Which embraces the unconscious as well as the conscious mind and whose centre is not the ego (which is only the centre of consciousness), nor yet the so-called super-ego, but the Self.” In Tarot, The Devil is one of the twenty-two Major Arcana cards, and has a different symbolism
Compared to the Christian’s view of the Devil as pure evil. The imagery is derived in part from Eliphas Levi’s famous illustration of Baphomet, supposedly worshipped by the Knights Templar. It is a hermaphroditic figure who also has goat horns, bat wings, and the talons of a
Predatory bird. Two fingers on the right hand point up and two on the left-hand point down, symbolising the alchemical maxim, “as above, so below.” Its arms bear the Latin words solve and coagula, to separate and to reunite. Jung writes: “[S]uch an attempt as the union of opposites
Appears to the Christian mentality as something devilish, something evil which is not allowed, something belonging to black magic.” In Jungian psychology, the role that the devil plays points to the one-sided Western image of God. In the West, the paradoxical behaviour and
Moral ambivalence of the gods of classical antiquity were not tolerated. In classical Judaism, Yahweh possesses both light and darkness. Good and evil are not separated from one another but are interrelated aspects of his numinosity. “I form the light, and create darkness:
I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.” In later times, the morally ambiguous Yahweh became a wholly good God, with no particle of evil in his nature. Christianity amputated God’s left hand, relegating Satan to the nether regions, thus leaving a wholly beneficent God to reign supreme in heaven.
Everything changes with Christ’s incarnation, God ceases to be ambiguous, and now becomes manifest in the form of man who is conscious and therefore has to discriminate between good and evil. Christ wanted to change Yahweh into a moral God of goodness, but in so doing he tore
Apart the opposites that were united in him. Thus, the first thing Christ did was to sever himself from his shadow and call it “devil”. The Devil became psychologically inevitable in that he is the personification of Christ’s split-off dark side. Unlike Christ, the Devil was created,
Not begotten. However, though Christ is the embodiment of the good, there still remain traces of his original moral ambivalence, as he states, “I bring not peace but the sword.” In fact, the Book of Revelation may have been written to provide a contrast to Christ’s gospel of love.
The devil can be regarded as God’s dissatisfaction with himself, a projection of his own doubt acting as a constant reminder of the flaw in creation, and thus a constant urge towards conscious realisation and thereby towards greater wholeness. We must be careful,
However, to not anthropomorphise God as a being, because he is being itself. The Devil is a necessary figure in life, not only because he allows us to distinguish good from evil, heaven from hell, virtue from sin, but also to make human action and freedom possible.
Had God not allowed the Devil the freedom to rebel, there would be no ego-consciousness, no civilisation, and no opportunity to transcend the ego through self-realisation. Humans would have been little more than machines and everything would have remained One forever.
The reason for the absence of the shadow is the doctrine of the summum bonum (the highest good); for the Christian, neither God nor Christ could be a paradox, both had to have a single meaning. God creates man in his own image; thus, man must be fundamentally good, but through his
Free will can choose otherwise. This one-sided perfection, however, demands a psychic complement to restore the balance, or else man will be hopelessly split into two irreconcilable halves. The concept of privatio boni (the absence of good) states that evil is simply the absence or lack of
Good, and therefore everything that exists is good. This idea tormented Jung and became the focus of much of his correspondence with various Christian clergymen, notably with Father Victor White. For Jung, good and evil are locked in an eternal duel for supremacy. Thus, if one believes
In one God, He must contain the two within Himself. White could not accept this and stated: “God is light; in Him there is no darkness.” This conflict led Jung to write Answer to Job, which he referred to as “pure poison”, because of its controversial nature. In this work,
He explores the shadow or dark side of God, Satan, who is to become the Antichrist, as a necessary compensation to the light side of God embodied in Christ. This is the deus absconditus, the hidden god that lies in the darkness of our Western unconscious.
The intermediary of Christ and The Antichrist as motivating forces is the Holy Spirit, a process whose psychological equivalent is the individuation of mankind, the journey towards becoming the Self, which constitutes our true nature and the wholeness of our personality.
The dark side is the missing fourth element of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit). The Trinitarian symbolism lacks the feminine, the material, and hence the dark substance of the flesh and the devil. Jung believed that the trinity should be
Supplanted by a quaternity, a common symbol for the Self. In Revelation, the Devil is locked into a hole without a bottom for a thousand years. After this he must be free for a while. As it is written: “When the thousand years are finished, Satan
Will be free to leave his prison. He will go out and fool the nations who are over all the world.” We can find a parallel in Norse mythology, with the trickster God Loki, eventually punished and bound by the gods. A serpent hangs above Loki, and drips venom onto him,
Which makes him writhe in agony, making the whole world shake and bringing about the earthquakes that preceded Ragnarök, the end of the world and the destruction of the gods. But why must the figure of the Devil be freed? Jung writes: “The coming of the Antichrist is not just a
Prophetic prediction – it is an invariable psychological law whose existence… brought him [John, author of the Book of Revelation] a sure knowledge of the impending enantiodromia.” If there is any one-sidedness to a pair, a conversion, or shift over to the other is
Likely. This is the fundamental psychological law of enantiodromia (a running towards the opposite), which Jung discovered from Heraclitus. Life itself is a contest of opposites: birth and death, health and sickness, good and evil. Soo too is our conscious attitude balanced by its unconscious opposite, in an attempt to restore psychic wholeness.
When the conscious mind has severed its unity with the unconscious, enantiodromia will take place. Polarity and opposition are universal laws, and no growth and development of human personality is possible without consideration of them. As Willam Blake writes: “Without contraries is no progression. Attraction and repulsion, reason and energy,
Love and hate, are necessary to human experience. From these contraries spring what the religious call Good and Evil.” One can master this polarity only be freeing oneself from them by contemplating both, and so reaching a middle position. To be at the
Border between yin and yang. Only there is one no longer at the mercy of the opposites. And for this one must be aware of the duality of one’s nature. Whatever leads to wholeness is good; whatever leads to splitting is evil. Integration is good, disintegration is evil.
Sometimes the holiest of people, commit the most heinous of acts – because they split themselves from necessary evil. The persecution of unbelievers and heretics, the burning on the stake, tortures, crusades – are all partly the result of the one-sided conscious attitude of purity and goodness, which causes shadow projection.
Jung writes of the compensatory role of the psyche in John, the author of Revelation, who strove to lead a pure, holy, and saintly life: “The “revelation” was experienced by an early Christian who, as a leading light of the community, presumably had to live an exemplary
Life and demonstrate to his flock the Christian virtues of true faith, humility, patience, devotion, selfless love, and denial of all worldly desires. In the long run this can become too much, even for the most religious… I have seen many compensating dreams of believing Christians…
But I have seen nothing that remotely resembles the brutal impact with which the opposites collide in John’s visions, except in the case of severe psychosis. However, John gives us no grounds for such a diagnosis… Like Job, he saw the fierce and terrible side of Yahweh. For this reason,
He felt his gospel of love to be one-sided, and he supplemented it with his gospel of fear… God has a terrible double aspect: a sea of grace is met by a seething lake of fire… That is the “eternal”, as distinct from the temporal, gospel: one can love God, but one must fear him.”
We must beware of thinking of good and evil as absolute opposites. They are halves of a paradoxical whole. When we realise this, we can turn inner conflict into inner peace. We experience reality as it is, and allow ourselves to be united with our whole Self.
However, the complete realisation of our potential is an unattainable ideal and is rarely if ever reached by anyone, except by a Christ or a Buddha, which are embodiments of the Self. But then, ideals are only signposts, never the goal. There is no psychic wholeness without imperfection. Only
Gods make something perfect. It is much better to know that one is not perfect, then one can feel truly at home. Nevertheless, the image of perfection is so ingrained in our culture that we feel guilty when we can’t achieve it. By definition, we are all sinners. Like Faust,
We must learn to find happiness in progress, and learn to live with sin (not in sin), doing our best to live a virtuous life. As we have seen, the Devil plays a crucial role in this. He is not just an abstract figure, but represents a real and serious psychological phenomenon,
Whose temptations can lead to meaninglessness or can act as that fearful power which drives us towards individuation. Without Satan as the God-opposing will, there would have been no creation and no work of salvation. We must, however, not give the Devil more credit
Than he is due. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist. The second greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he is the good guy.
-We’re about to start my initiation ritual, into the “Luciferian” religion. -I saw him, an angel, he was enormous, with seven wings. I’m organizing an army of Lucifer’s children. What would be the ultimate goal of this army? To confront them. -Who, you wonder? -The grand whore. -The grand whore, you mean Catholic church?
We bring this man before you. LUCIFER’S TEMPLE Hi, I’m Andrés Páramo. We’re really close to what is called the Luciferian Temple, Seeds of Light, led by a guy called Victor Damian Rozo. Hello friends from Latin America, I’m Victor Damian Rozo Villareal. Founder of the Association, Luciferian Temple, Seeds of Light.
We came here to interview him and to do a satanic initiation ritual. And to also see what people think about this and what their opinions are regarding this phenomenon. Until now he hasn’t revealed himself. Some girls that entered that place came out mentally insane. The way they adore Lucifer by sacrificing innocent animals,
Killing them in such a cruel way so they can drink their blood and idolizing Lucifer’s image. We’re carrying out some legal proceedings, not because of the religion they practice but because they don’t have the legal requirements to construct their building. They’re going to be fined
$64 million pesos. He has to pay it if not they’ll demolish the place. Even the police have visited but they didn’t find anyone in there. The devil for us is a negative thing, a symbol of all bad things like, no values We haven’t done anything here because we haven’t found anything
But we will keep our doors closed if we do. The people we interviewed at Quimbaya square all had the same opinion about Victor Damian and his temple. They all rejected the idea and were afraid of it so they kept the emergence of this Luciferian religion at a cautious distance.
A different story emerged when we traveled to his farm. Alberto Trujillo, a neighbor who worked for him doing many things, took us on a ride, recounting a kinder, more humane side of Lucifer’s son. -Yes, I’m his driver. He’ll ask me to go and buy materials for him since he’s sick.
-Yeah, and do you live close to him? Our properties are close to each other. -Yeah, and what do you think about the temple? Nothing, everyone has the right to do their own thing. -Even if it’s Satanic? -Yes. -And if he’s the devil, he’s just as bad. Yes or no? -Yes.
He’s evil so we have to take care of ourselves. -Well, what about Damian? -What do you think about him? -No, he’s very professional. -Very professional. -Hail Mary, for sure. -He just built that temple about a year ago. -And nothing has happened? No, nothing has happened. -Nobody has gone there? No, no.
-And don’t you find that a bit weird? A temple where nothing happens? Some people say that they use it to film horror movies. So they made that space to film horror movies. about vampires. The ranch has two houses, two swimming pools, a couple of German Shepherds, and finally, in the distance,
The construction of a building with inverted crosses. From the outside, the temple looks deserted, abandoned and totally private. And for being a church, it doesn’t really feel welcoming. -Victor or Hector? -Victor is more of an alias. But my real name is Hector Londoño Villegas. Victor Damián Rozo is more of a personality.
-So, Hector, please tell us what this space is about? On this side we have a shield, “Satanas Rae”, with an inverted cross on the shield, which represents the rebellion, a worldwide rejection of religion, of Christianity. And why do you reject Catholicism? Because of their history and what they have done to us.
Because of what they represent, this huge scam that they’ve embroiled us in for thousands of years. This is a Luciferian shield. It represents good and evil. And what is the evil part? Evil for us does not exist. Got it? What’s important to us is your character and behavior.
If you do good things than you’re going to have a good life. It all depends on your behavior. As followers of Lucifer, we do not believe in evil as something that’s imposed on us. If you do this, you’re bad. That having sex with your neighbor’s wife is bad. No.
We don’t believe in that. To make a pact with the devil is to change your doctrine, change your religion. To make a pact with the devil is nothing else but to embrace him and accept him. I wanted to deliver this message and grab the people’s attention in a certain way.
My goal here on Earth is to gather souls for him. So I had to send a message since people know him like this. So, I had to do something like a marketing campaign. Hello friends from Latin America. I am Victor Damian Rozo Villareal. Lucifer’s representative here on earth.
And, founder of Lucifer’s Temple, Seeds of Light. The only Luciferian temple in the world. Don’t let yourself be fooled! Don’t you let them take your money anymore. Don’t let them scam you. If they do, you’re gullible. Don’t be fooled! This is Victor Damian Rozo, the founder of the Luciferian Temple, Seeds of Light.
-Tell me, where are you from? -I come from a very spiritual family. From witch doctors and sorcerers. My mother was a renown spiritist. My grandfather too, he healed and cursed as he wished. I stared studying this when I was in school. I remember I used to get my books and a Ouija board,
And I would go study. I would go to the bathroom and I began playing with the Ouija board there. I explored new things. And as I got older I started to work as a spiritist. As a sorcerer. Like what your mom did? Exactly. But, it was a side job
Because before this, I used to do random jobs. I use to be a normal person, working in shoe warehouses, selling clothes. -All day? -All day. But when was the moment where you decided to work for Lucifer, and nothing else? In a dream, I saw him, he was an enormous angel,
And he told me that he had big plans for me. He told me, you are the chosen one. Got it. I chose you to gather my children. We have to organize the army of the children of Lucifer. What would that army’s goal be? We would confront them. Who, you wonder? The great whore.
The great whore? The Catholic church? Yes, the Catholic church. I’m here on earth, sent by my father, Lucifer. I was sent by him, to gather souls. To gather souls, devoted followers for Lucifer. For our amazing God, I am the chosen one. -We’re in front of La Crónica building,
One of the most important and established newspapers in this region. In there, Oliver Gomez is waiting for us. A journalist that has been following Lucifer’s son very closely. Among other things, he has reported that this guy hasn’t traveled around the world, but has actually photoshopped himself into these pictures.
So let’s hear what he has to say. I found out about him from a report that I wrote about a person that has no legs. -Why do you do this? Because it’s easier for me to receive what I need from the devil than with God. And I hope that Mr. Damian helps me.
What tangible things has Lucifer given to you, what do you have now? Right now, I have some money saved, a car, and my health. He has given me what I dreamed of, and I have more dreams that he’s going to help come true for me.
But then he told me that it was a lie. It was a scam, he received money to do that. And that guy ended up scamming him as well. Journalistically speaking, what do you think was the most serious thing? His false advertising. You can’t play with people’s hopes and dreams.
We seen his videos on the internet, I think he’s deleted them all but fortunately we downloaded one of them and we uploaded it to our platform. We saw a powerful, rich man telling people that they could get all these material things Just as he did with the handicapped man,
The man with no legs, who’s asks for help in southern part of the city. This was all a lie. So lying to people and playing with their dreams is the worst thing about Damian Rozo, or whatever his name is. He’s destroying people’s dreams.
Hello, friends from a Latin America. This is Victor Damian Rozo. The founder of the Luciferian Temple, Seeds of Light. Your temple. The benefits are clear and obvious. You’ll leave your sadness behind. Rebel against the regime and start worshipping Satan, the true god, Lucifer.
Are you tired of looking for God and answers that you can’t find? Contact me, from anywhere in the world. I’ll tell you how you can be a true believer and make a pact with Lucifer. My name is Victor Damian Rozo Villarreal. Dare to do it! Let yourself be surprised.
As night fell, we came back to Victor Damian’s farmhouse to see him in action. To see how far or close we were to the possible manifestation of this serious religion. We are about to start my initiation ritual into the Luciferian religion. Victor Damian is anxiously awaiting, but I think I’m more anxious.
There are some of his followers. He’s wearing a red tunic the rest of them are wearing black tunics. and they’re about to dress me up to convert me into a believer. We’ll see what happens tonight. We’re gathered here, once again to venerate the name of our father, Lucifer.
We need a lot of discipline and consistency. In the name of our father, Lucifer, the God we worship, please, let’s “hit a home run” as they colloquially say. King of Earth. Planetary King. Before you, Lucifer, is this man. Open up his eyes. He’s here before you, God of freedom.
God of love, God of the universe. Oh, Lucifer. We present this man before you. Praying for you. I curse the presence of that false God they taught us to adore. I curse the presence of that God that I used to follow. Your revenge is my revenge. Your power is my power.
Your light is my light. Your goodness is my goodness. You taught me the true meaning of goodness. Your gave me freedom, you gave me power. Your gave me a true reason to live. For eternity, our eternal celestial father, we stand before you, Lucifer. My soul evokes your presence.
Our souls are longing for the end of times. The day when we will finally fight at your side. The day of the final battle, when we will be victorious. Glory to you, Father Lucifer. Repeat after me: -Before you. -Before you. -Powerful God of freedom. -Powerful God of freedom. -Powerful Lucifer. -Powerful Lucifer.
-God of the Universe. -God of the Universe. -God of freedom. -God of freedom. -God of love. -God of love. -God of power. -God of power. -God of richness. -God of richness. -I come before you. -I come before you. -Here we are. -Here we are. -In your temple. -In your temple.
-Looking for. -Looking for. -The path. -The path. -That leads me. -That leads me. -To you. -To you. -It is for you to judge, not me. The Luciferian ceremony has come to an end. One of the thousand ceremonies that have taken place here at the Luciferian Temple, Seeds of Light.
How did feel me throughout the ritual? You were very relaxed, very calm and curious. What about what we did in the temple, like making me go down on my knees What was that for exactly? That was an invocation to our father, Lucifer.
But it all depends on him, he knows if you really want it. I feel that you really don’t want to be a Luciferian. That’s what I believe. I think that your beliefs are different. I don’t know what your beliefs are, but I respect them.
But I don’t think you’re really interested in being a Luciferian. Now it depends on him, if he decides to accept you. The ceremony has come to an end. It was intense. It seems now that Lucifer is going to decide if I’ll be a part of his reign. We’ll see tomorrow how I feel.
-We are back in Montenegro Quindío, the day after the ceremony. We were left with some doubts yesterday. Everything went too fast. I’d like to know how this place usually works. Victor Damián is really charming. I found him fascinating during the interview.
He’s very kind, recieved us openly and he put on a good show. The ceremony was incredible, but there were some details that disappointed me a little bit. His cellphone kept ringing throughout the ceremony. He paid his followers. We have an audio recording
Where he told them he’ll give them a certain amount of money for their time. -How much for you? $10 pesos? -$11 pesos. -$11 pesos? -Fine, $11 pesos. -May God bless you, my son. That man has $50 pesos for each one of you. Arrange it with him.
Guys, please head out fast. Hurry up! Hurry up! Oh! This is what I love the most about parties. These are the tunics that the believers used. Today we found them in the swimming pool, in a very visible place. We also found the cross thrown over there.
The cross they used to purify me yesterday is now laying here at the entrance. All the things that we found the next day after the ceremony make me doubt the faith that Lucifer’s son has in his father. However, that doesn’t take away from his charisma when speaking about
The subject, or the grandiosity of the ceremony he conducted. There’s no doubt that this guy knows how to put on a show. What’s the purpose of forgiveness, if they keep cheating on people? If they keep subjugating them? If they keep taking people to churches
So they can take away the little money they have. While they continue to get richer and richer, and the people get poorer. Don’t close your eyes during the day, and say, “It must be nighttime since I only see darkness.” No! Dare to join us, and you will be surprised.
Oh the antichrist is coming hi it’s thomas we’re in cleveland outside the house of wills this is an old funeral home owned by one eric freeman who is cleveland’s leading proponent of satanic thought he is uh formally associated with anton lavey and some of his children from the church of satan
I’m curious about full term possession like wholly giving yourself over to dark forces and they think of no better format for doing so than satanism where the foundational right is selling your soul to the biggest dark force of all the government so tonight we will be conducting uh one of the satanic rituals
Is written by levay the ceremony of the nine angles and uh we will hopefully be summoning the goat of a thousand ages and maybe indoctrinating ourselves into the order of the nine angels which is a secret society of satanists perhaps the most secret society of satanists who advocate animal sacrifice human
Sacrifice and reshaping the world according to your will let’s see if it works Hail satan Well like what is satanism like really i mean to me it’s a logical format of exactly how to fundamentally get the most out of life without any kind of dogma superstition fear or anything else controlling you it’s you being completely in control of your universe
Okay and in satanism we have our own you know general structure of how we treat people oh can you describe that structure well i mean it’s pretty simple we absolutely do not turn the other cheek stupidity is the number one sin if you’re magic and you create something never doubt yourself
Because once you doubt yourself it’s gone and that’s the that’s the worst part about heaven or hell or any of that is that people fundamentally believe that after this existence they’re going to go to a better place so what you do here doesn’t matter and that that’s
Really sad i would say these things like the skulls the tombstones the coffins any of these various objects of our memento mori’s are just symbols of death these uh do not imply in any way that we’re the least bit eager to die or have any sort of freudian death wish on the
Contrary these are constant reminders that death is around the corner and death doesn’t present a better uh than what we have now world can you walk me through the roots of american satanism i would state that uh most ideas of western satanism was probably come from the fool society back in the
Uh in germany in the uh early 1900s after that you absolutely have crowley who is the most evil man you know alive i mean when you look at him his do without wilt turned into do your own thing which is absolutely instrumental in the structure of the 60s the 70s you know
Even today with let your freak flag like that’s all based on crowley who’s the most evil man in the world but then you have this hippie peace movement that spawns from this gentleman you can even go to charles manson who was instrumental in ottowa what is the air
Trees water earth i believe the green movement today is all based on charles manson this is a man that’s still in prison today who never killed anyone like if you want to talk about will and what you can create that man like that man knows what’s going on and that’s why
They have him in a cage and if you ask him like hey do you like jail he’ll just straight up he’ll be like what jail because he knows that he can do whatever he wants in his mind is he completely sane absolutely not but that doesn’t mean that he’s
Completely ignorant as to the way things work it’s the duality of nature that people don’t comprehend they only see one thing when they look at things the altar is a living slab of flesh in the personification or in the person of a nude young woman the altar stone or the
Mantle which holds the officer was made from cobblestones from the san francisco streets that were broken up in the 1906 earthquake satan is simply a word that means the adversary or the opposition or the accuser it doesn’t necessarily mean evil or brutality or cruelty it simply means the dissenter
This is evidently today’s ritual room in the basement i know and these are i presume the participants in uh the ceremony we’re about to conduct this looks about right the order of the nine angles is actually taken from michael aquino who is the co-founder of the church of satan with levay wrote the
Satanic rituals at least the mentality behind is you utilize different trappings to collect more power so that you have more power to alter reality as a thought great center of the cosmos let thy fluids sing unto us lulling us against the terrorists of thy domain whether it existed or didn’t exist it
Exists today that’s the mentality of you know crowley manson all of it it’s all a mental state where you restructure the entire universe through your thought process satanists don’t believe in the devil they don’t believe in heaven hell god anything we believe in us and we believe in our will
Altering reality that it’s your life it’s your reality and you have the ability to do whatever you want and either you can do it or you can’t do it you can either be a victim or you can be a winner and it’s up to you on which
Choice which path you want to take you can either be part of it or you can be it you
– Back in the ’80s and early ’90s, a wave of troubling accusations swept across North America. – New and intense scrutiny on the activities of Satanic cults. – [Reporter] Stories of devil worship and Satanic cults corrupting young minds– – Unbelievable crime at the hands of Satanic cults.
– There were terrifying tales of secret Satanic cults bent on tormenting and corrupting the young. Heavy metal music had hidden Satanic messages. – Possibly Satanic messages on some rock music recordings. – Games like Dungeons and Dragons were luring kids to devil worship, and it got even stranger.
– The allegations of physical and sexual abuse of children at a babysitting service. – The dark world of ritualistic child abuse. – [Reporter] There’s a widely held opinion that what happened at the daycare was the devil’s handiwork. – Underground networks of Satanists were infiltrating daycares and preschools
To physical and sexually abuse children in occult rituals. Much of what fueled the panic was not real, but these claims led to a wave of high-profile criminal trials in the US, Canada, and beyond. The cases often followed a similar pattern, an initial report of physical or sexual abuse at a daycare would snowball, taking on a life of its own. Overzealous interveners, everyone from parents to police to counselors would question children, some as young as two years old, in ways now known to produce false allegations.
Children began to talk about animal sacrifices, blood rituals, secret tunnels, even cannibalism. Police would lay charges, prosecutors would take them to court, and the media would report uncritically on what seemed to be a growing threat. – [Reporter] Authorities searched frantically for evidence of an apparent ritual abuse epidemic across North America.
– Some cases would fall apart at trial or during appeal. Others resulted in wrongful convictions. Many of the accused spent years in prison, while others faced financial ruin and damaged reputations. As it turns out, the Satanic Panic may have its origins in Canada. When asked about the spark that set off the hellfire,
Many experts point to this book, “Michelle Remembers”, published in 1980, written by Canadian Psychiatrist Lawrence Pazder, and his former patient Michelle Smith. The book provided a template for the allegations of Satanic ritual abuse that followed. Pazder claimed he helped Smith recover repressed memories from her early childhood of a terrifying initiation
Into a secret cabal of Satanists operating near Victoria, British Columbia. – They would put me in cages. They would sacrifice animals. They would have a lot of candles, and chanting, and bizarre things I had never seen. – Did people think this was a fantasy? That you made this all up?
It was such hocus pocus that it couldn’t possibly have happened? – Well, I was one of the first to stand up and start to recount these kinds of things to bring it publicly. – There was no evidence or witnesses to Smith’s account, yet Pazder presented the book as a true story.
– The hard evidence is difficult to find, because if a child is sacrificed, that child’s body isn’t gonna be left. If it’s an Orthodox Satanic cult they’re going to burn the body and they’re going to eat it during ceremony so they’ll leave no evidence around.
– “Michelle Remembers” is also one of the first books to suggest that underground Satanic networks were not only real, but were infiltrating communities in and organized effort. Anyone could be a Satanist, your nextdoor neighbor, your dentist, or your daycare provider. It was an idea that stuck with many readers.
– The book is called “Michelle Remembers”. – The book became an overnight sensation, and Pazder and Smith received a lucrative publishing deal, about $1.2 million in today’s dollars. It also established Pazder as a sought-after expert on the burgeoning phenomenon of ritual abuse, a term he coined himself.
There was even talk of a movie deal with Dustin Hoffman playing Pazder. For the McMartin Pre-School trial in Manhattan Beach, California where seven daycare workers were accused of ritually abusing children, Pazder was flown down to be an expert consultant in Satanic cults for the prosecution. In another ritual abuse case in Bakersfield, California,
“Michelle Remembers” was used as training material by social workers who believed they had uncovered an extensive Satanic pedophile ring. Specialists in Satanic ideology were suddenly in high demand as more and more ritual abuse cases went to trial. In Austin, Texas, another self-styled Satanic cult expert was used to secure the convictions
Of daycare owners Dan and Fran Keller, who spent decades in prison before being exonerated. It became increasingly common to see ritual crime training seminars led by psychologists, church groups, and even the police. This is former FBI agent Ken Lanning, who studied the spread of the panic in the ’80s.
– [Ken] All the people network with each other, and they’d all get together and goes to seminars and discussions, and they’d be told, “This is what Satanists do and this is how they do it.” And so all that is planted through the use of these kinds of techniques, hypnosis and other ways,
That cause the spread of this kind of stuff. So many people say, “Well, you can’t identify these cases “unless you’ve been trained to learn about them.” And some of that training becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. – The commercial success of “Michelle Remembers” inspired dozens of copy-cat memoirs, which further amplified the perception
That Satanic ritual abuse was widespread, but there was never any evidence of a Satanic conspiracy. In 1994, a psychologist from the University of California researched over 12,000 accusations of ritual abuse, but found no substantiated reports of organzied Satanic groups who sexually abused children. In later years, as the panic died down,
Pazder tried to distance himself from the claims he made in “Michelle Remembers”. – I’m not there to believe or not believe, I’m there to try and understand what they’re trying to tell me of an experience. Whether that has actually happened to them or that is their way of trying to express
A profound pain that they’ve experienced. – But neither he nor Smith ever publicly renounced the book’s allegations. This strange period of moral hysteria serves as a reminder of what can happen when we abandon the pursuit of facts for a more sensational fiction. The question is have we learned our lesson?
I’m Lisa Bryn Rundle, host of “Uncover Satanic Panic”. You can listen to the series now on the CBC Listen App or wherever you get your podcasts. – Is there a well-organized plot, an insidious design right now to program and influence the minds of our children towards the occult and witchcraft?
We do not sacrifice children. The foundation of Satanism is built upon the self and carrying out the devil’s work. Hail Satan! Hail Satan! Hail Satan! Hail Satan! Hi! My name is Zeke Apollyon and I am the chapter head for the Satanic Temple, London and UK.
I think what attracted me most to Satanism, I think how preposterous a lot of stuff that was coming from people who call themselves Christians. These people are extremists, they’re religious extremists. That use Christianity to kind of further their extremism. Some of these people have blood on their hands, and so
I figured if they could do horrible things in the name of Jesus then I could do wonderful things in the name of Satan. It’s so liberating. It is so liberating. I don’t think I’ve ever felt as in my own skin as I do as a Satanist
Because, I mean part of it is looking at like ugly sides of yourself and being able to sort of reconcile that and looking at ugly sides of humanity. No. No. I don’t want to catch anything and I’m pretty sure other people don’t either.
People get in touch with us and we just have a conversation. A lot of times what people want is community, a lot of people feel like outsiders and so they come to us because they’re looking for people that are accepting. They do not come around anymore. They don’t come around anymore.
They came over one time when we were having a big ritual and they must have seen it on my face or something ’cause I opened the door to come out to get something and they were walking up the path and I was just like, no! And they just turned around and left.
And I haven’t seen them since. We still live in a time when people who are satanists have to live incognito? But I think in terms of misconceptions about Satanists I think people think that we sacrifice babies, that we are engaged in some kind of like underground sex trafficking.
I’ve definitely met some babies that I haven’t really gotten on with very well, but I’ve never actually killed one. There’s a little girl in the window right there. Satanism, it’s been a philosophy or a way of life for people for a very long time.
For me, Satanism is really about not letting myself off the hook. And I believe for me that being a Satanist is about trying to continually advocate for people especially people who aren’t able to advocate for themselves. You could definitely go much worse than to use those things
As your way to kind of move forward. Every day! In fact somebody is probably right now, asking us to put them in touch with the devil. People ask for riches, they ask if we can allow them access to the Illuminati. Some of the weirdest interactions are people who like send us satanic prayers.
People will sometimes ask us to pass on messages to the devil. And I’m like, we’re not the devils answering service. I wish! Satanism is a love affair with the self. Actually, I think one of the things that the Satanic Temple wants to do is actually sponsor an orgy.
We do, but like we would be there as people who would fold the towels and we would make sure that there was enough condoms and lube. And we would provide sex education. A lot of us are trained. Some of us are medics. And what we would do is facilitate
What would be like a safe, consensual, group sex practice for people and it would benefit something. I think it would be great if Satanists went on Love Island. That would be amazing. I totally would. I would turn that party out.
